ChatGPT Visibility - How to Check If ChatGPT Mentions
ChatGPT holds 78% of the AI search market. Here is how to check whether it mentions your business, why it might not, and what to do about it.
ChatGPT holds 78% of the AI search market. It processes over 2.5 billion prompts daily. If your business does not appear when people ask ChatGPT about your industry, you are missing the largest AI search channel. Checking is simple. Fixing it is straightforward.
Why ChatGPT visibility matters
ChatGPT is the dominant AI search platform. It holds 78% of the AI search market. It drives 87.4% of all AI referral traffic. Over 2.5 billion prompts are processed daily. When someone asks ChatGPT for a business recommendation, there is no results page. ChatGPT gives a direct answer. Your business is either in that answer or it is not.
This is different from Google. There is no position 1 through 10. There is no scrolling. ChatGPT picks the businesses it mentions, and everyone else is invisible. For most businesses, ChatGPT visibility is the single highest-impact AI search action available.
How ChatGPT finds content
ChatGPT finds content using three methods. Training data (information learned during model training). Bing search (live web results pulled when browsing is enabled). Three dedicated crawlers that collect web data. ChatGPT indexes from Bing, not Google. If your site is not in Bing, ChatGPT cannot find you through web search.
ChatGPT's three crawlers
OpenAI operates three separate bots that visit websites. Each has a different purpose:
| Bot name | Purpose | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| GPTBot | Training data | Collects content to train future models. Blocking this means your content will not appear in ChatGPT's training data. |
| OAI-SearchBot | Live web search | Fetches pages in real time when ChatGPT searches the web. This is the most important bot for live visibility. |
| ChatGPT-User | Link previews and browsing | Visits pages when users share links or when ChatGPT browses to answer a query. |
All three bots identify themselves in your server logs. Search your access logs for these user agent strings. If none have visited, your site may be blocked or not yet discovered.
The Bing connection
When ChatGPT searches the web, it pulls results from Bing's index. This is the most important fact for ChatGPT visibility. Most UK businesses focus on Google and ignore Bing. If your site is not in Bing, ChatGPT's web search cannot find you.
Submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools. Set up IndexNow for instant indexing of new pages. If you are a local business, create a Bing Places listing. Read our Bing submission guide for the full process.
How to check your ChatGPT visibility
Open ChatGPT and type prompts that your customers would use. Try variations like:
- "What are the best [your service] companies in [your area]?"
- "Who should I use for [your service] in the UK?"
- "Can you recommend a [your industry] specialist?"
- "Compare [competitor A] and [competitor B] for [your service]"
- "What should I look for when choosing a [your industry] provider?"
Run at least five different prompts. Note whether your business appears, whether it appears accurately, and whether competitors are mentioned instead.
What to record during your check
For each prompt, write down:
- Whether your business was mentioned
- Whether the information was accurate (services, location, description)
- Which competitors appeared instead
- What language ChatGPT used to describe you (positive, neutral, cautious)
- Whether ChatGPT cited a source or gave an unsourced answer
This gives you a baseline. Run the same prompts monthly to track changes.
Automated monitoring tools
Manual checks are useful but time-consuming. Several tools automate ChatGPT visibility tracking. Otterly monitors your brand across multiple AI platforms. Peec AI provides detailed citation analysis. Why ChatGPT might not mention you
There are four common reasons your business is invisible to ChatGPT: you are not indexed in Bing (ChatGPT's data source), you are blocking GPTBot or OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt, your brand mentions across the web are too weak, or your site content does not clearly state what you do.
1. You are not on Bing
ChatGPT indexes from Bing, not Google. If your site is not in Bing's index, ChatGPT cannot find you. Submit your sitemap at Bing Webmaster Tools and set up a Bing Places listing. This is the most common cause of ChatGPT invisibility for businesses that rank well on Google.
2. You are blocking AI crawlers
Check your robots.txt for lines blocking GPTBot or OAI-SearchBot. 23% of UK businesses block AI crawlers without knowing it. Many CMS platforms and security plugins add these blocks by default. WordPress sites are particularly prone to this. A single line in robots.txt can make you completely invisible to ChatGPT.
3. Weak brand mentions
Brand mentions across the web have a 0.664 correlation with AI citations. If nobody is talking about your brand online, ChatGPT has no signal to work with. Brand mentions matter more than backlinks (0.218 correlation) for AI visibility. Focus on getting your business name mentioned in directories, review sites, industry publications, and YouTube.
4. Unclear content
Your site needs to clearly state what you do, who you serve, and where you operate. 53% of UK business websites have an H1 that does not clearly identify the business. AI systems extract answers from content, so vague or marketing-heavy copy gets skipped. ChatGPT needs clear, factual statements to work with.
5. No schema markup
44% of UK SME websites have no Organisation schema. Without structured data, ChatGPT has to guess what your business does based on unstructured text. Schema markup gives ChatGPT clean, machine-readable information about your business name, services, location, and credentials.
6. Stale content
76% of pages cited by AI platforms were updated within the last 30 days. If your website content was last updated in 2023 or 2024, ChatGPT is less likely to cite it. Regular updates signal that your information is current and reliable.
What affects ChatGPT citation decisions
ChatGPT decides what to cite based on Bing search results, brand authority, content clarity, and structured data. Pages with Organisation schema, clear answer capsules, and consistent brand mentions across the web are cited more often. Tables deliver a 2.5x citation multiplier.
Content format preferences
ChatGPT prefers content that is easy to extract and quote. These formats perform best:
- Direct definitions. "X is defined as..." gets cited 2x more often than hedged language like "X may refer to..."
- Answer capsules. 40-60 word self-contained blocks after each heading. These are the most extracted content type.
- Tables. 2.5x citation multiplier for comparisons, pricing, and feature lists.
- Numbered lists. Step-by-step content that ChatGPT can present as a process.
- Statistics with context. Specific numbers (e.g. "78% market share") get cited more than vague claims.
Entity signals
ChatGPT builds confidence in your business by cross-referencing signals. More consistent data points mean a higher chance of recommendation. Key entity signals include:
- Organisation schema with sameAs links to LinkedIn, YouTube, and GBP
- Consistent business name and description across all web profiles
- Author attribution with Person schema linking to real people
- Reviews and ratings on Google, Trustpilot, and industry platforms
- Wikipedia or Wikidata entries (for larger organisations)
Ecommerce considerations
ChatGPT mentions brands in 99.3% of ecommerce responses. It averages 5.84 brands per response. If you sell products, ChatGPT is already making recommendations in your category. Product schema with genuine AggregateRating data feeds these recommendations. Give your product pages clear names, descriptions, prices, and review data in structured format.
How to improve your ChatGPT visibility
Here is a prioritised action list. Start at the top.
- Submit to Bing. Create a Bing Webmaster Tools account. Submit your sitemap. Set up IndexNow.
- Unblock crawlers. Check robots.txt. Allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and ChatGPT-User.
- Fix your H1. State your service, audience, and location in plain English.
- Add Organisation schema. Include name, URL, logo, description, areaServed, and sameAs links.
- Write answer capsules. Add a 40-60 word factual summary after every H2 on key pages.
- Add FAQ schema. 3-5 questions per page matching real customer queries. Delivers a 350% citation increase.
- Build brand mentions. Directory listings, YouTube, reviews, and industry publications.
- Update content monthly. Refresh key pages with genuine new information.
- Add Speakable schema. Point it at your answer capsules. Under 10% adoption, 127% citation lift.
- Create an llms.txt file. Plain-text summary of your site for AI platforms.
ChatGPT visibility for local businesses
Local businesses have a significant opportunity in ChatGPT. When users ask "best plumber in Bristol" or "restaurant near me", ChatGPT draws from Bing Places, Google Business Profile data, and brand mentions. A Bing Places listing is the single most important step for local ChatGPT visibility.
Local businesses should take these additional steps:
- Create a complete Bing Places listing with photos, hours, and services
- Ensure Google Business Profile is fully optimised (ChatGPT cross-references this data)
- Add LocalBusiness schema to your homepage with address, geo coordinates, and opening hours
- Get reviews on multiple platforms (Google, Trustpilot, industry-specific sites)
- Build local citations in directories like Yell, Thomson Local, and Scoot

Monitoring ChatGPT visibility over time
ChatGPT visibility is not static. Citations change as new content is published, competitors improve, and ChatGPT's models are updated. Monitor your visibility regularly.
Monthly check routine
- Run your 5 test prompts in ChatGPT
- Record which businesses appear and in what order
- Check accuracy of your business description

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to appear in ChatGPT?
Technical fixes (Bing submission, robots.txt, schema) can produce results within 2-4 weeks. Brand building and content improvements take 2-6 months. The fastest win is usually Bing indexing. Many businesses are not in Bing's index at all.
Does blocking GPTBot affect my ChatGPT visibility?
Blocking GPTBot prevents your content from being included in ChatGPT's training data. Blocking OAI-SearchBot prevents ChatGPT from finding your pages through live web search. Both blocks reduce your visibility, but OAI-SearchBot blocking has the most immediate impact.
Can I control what ChatGPT says about my business?
Not directly. You cannot edit ChatGPT's answers. But you can influence them by making your website content clear, accurate, and consistent. The clearer your content, the more accurately ChatGPT describes you. If ChatGPT says something inaccurate, fix the source content on your site and web profiles.
Does Google ranking help with ChatGPT visibility?
Not directly. ChatGPT uses Bing, not Google. However, the same content qualities that help you rank on Google (clarity, authority, freshness) also help with ChatGPT. AI visibility and traditional SEO share common foundations.
Is ChatGPT visibility different for B2B and B2C?
The principles are the same, but B2B queries tend to be more specific and niche. This can be an advantage. B2B businesses that clearly define their speciality often face less competition in ChatGPT answers than B2C brands in crowded consumer categories.
